The John Molson Stock Exchange

On November 12th, 2011, the John Molson School of Business (JMSB) of Concordia University will host the John Molson Stock Exchange (JMSE). The JMSE will host more than 250 students from the JMSB and other Canadian universities; each student pursuing to claim the title of “Top Student Trading Team”.

Using software specifically designed for the John Molson School of Business, the JMSE provides competitors with the most realistic experience.

The presitgious event will:

  • Showcase the recently built, John Molson School of Business’ state-of-the-art facilities to the city of Montreal;
  • Induce exposure for the students of John Molson School of Business and its student guests to the Montreal and Quebec business community;
  • Develop relationships between the JMSB, the Montreal / Quebec business community and the other universities across Canada;
  • Collectively assemble specific companies from the business industry and the brightest students from all of Canada, to provide networking and information opportunities; and
  • Provide students and volunteers with a real open outcry trading floor experience to apply theories learnt in the class room.

Procedure

The JMSE’s aim is to recreate the atmosphere and energy of an open outcry futures market and provide students an idea of the financial market in the real world.

  • Each participant is entrusted with a fictitious portfolio with a final objective of maximizing it’s value by the end of the competition.
  • The simulation takes in place in four 30 minute quarters which is equivalent to one stock exchange year.
  • Every buyer and seller will have to compete against each other while receiving solicitations for bids and entertaining offers in-between each other.
  • Traders will have the option to trade between two distinct future markets, in hopes of gaining an edge over the competition.
  • Throughout the simulation, many events will come to unsettle the market.
  • These political or economic events will have to be managed by the contestant, in order to benefit from the impediment or to reduce their losses.
  • Various strategies will have to be tested by the participants to outmaneuver the condition of the market & their peers in order to generate the most benefits.
  • Participants will be ranked at the end according to their total portfolio value.
